To Our Community:
In this moment when the value of humanitarian organizations is being questioned and the rights and dignity of marginalized people in our community are being threatened, we feel compelled to recommit to why we exist as a not for profit, fair trade store (and have for the past 32 years).
We promote the rights and dignity of workers. The products we sell are made by artisans and small farmers who are low income, women, disabled, refugees, and face other barriers to traditional employment. Many of these workers are organized in cooperatives that follow democratic principles. Through fair trade, these talented and hard-working folks earn living wages, work in safe conditions, support their families and communities, and share their cultural traditions with our community.
We believe diversity is a strength and fair trade is an avenue to a more just, equitable, and beautiful world. We are committed to keeping our store a safe, peaceful, and accessible space for all, no matter your race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ability, or immigration status.
We reject the notion that treating people with fairness, compassion, and respect is partisan or political, and our aim is that these principles and values are embedded in everything we do.
Signed,
Your BCFT family ❤️
